The abdominal muscles form part of your ‘core’ as do all other muscles in the tummy and the mid & lower back. Strong core muscles are important for stabilising movement, good posture, preventing lower-back pain as well as helping you feel more confident in your bikini.

The six-pack is given its name because of how the stomach muscles are made up under the surface. If you can’t see definition in your stomach then it doesn’t mean you don’t have any abdominals it just means they are hidden away under a layer of fat! Men find it easier to burn fat and create this defined six-pack look, however, that doesn’t mean ladies can’t get there too – as Jessica Ennis and many other athletes have proven.

To get a six-pack you need to burn fat and build muscle – simple, right? Well yes, it is a simple formula, however, it does take hard work, determination and commitment but is achievable if you really set your mind to it.

To burn fat you’ll need to limit carbohydrate intake (foods such as pasta, potatoes, cereal, fruit & sugar) so the body is forced to burn fat for energy. You’ll see good results if you do this for 4-6 weeks. Drink green tea and lots of water whilst you follow this food plan to ensure you are hydrated and to stimulate the metabolism.

Whilst you are burning away some of the fat you need to start working on building muscle. Do core strengthening exercises at least 3 times a day, every day to see best results. You can also give yourself a core workout whilst doing everyday activities. To engage your core muscles simply stand or sit up straight, focus on pulling your tummy in towards your spine without holding your breath and hold this position for 15 seconds at a time or as long as you can. Do this as many times as possible whilst you sit at your desk, drive home from work or watch TV.

The six-pack look isn’t necessarily the most important part of a training programme, however, being lean, having a healthy body fat % and a good level of fitness are and these are all things that we can aim for so we feel more confident on the beach this summer.
