Last week, we delivered our first ‘Get More Focused, More Organised & More Successful at home and at work’ Workshop at our Private Personal Training Gym Studio in Loughborough. This was the first time I had delivered a workshop all about mindset and how to get more motivated so you achieve greater success and faster too.

As a highly motivated and driven person myself, I forget sometimes that not everyone is in the habit of setting goals and has 100% unbreakable confidence that when they do set goals they will achieve them every time. But that’s how I feel when I set goals, so I want to share that with you.

Firstly, to get more focused we need to set the goals for you to focus on. Your goal may be a health, fitness or wellbeing goal or it may be something work or family related – whatever it is the same rules apply.

All goals must be SMART – i.e. Specific, Measurable, Agreed, Realistic and Timed. I’ll give you some examples of how to turn general goals in to SMART goals.

1. I want to lose weight

  • Specific – weight loss
  • Measurable – how much weight loss? 2kg
  • Agreed – who are you accountable to? I am working with a personal trainer who will weigh me once a week
  • Realistic – Do you have the weight to lose? Yes, I have 5kg to lose in total but I will concentrate on losing 2kg first
  • Timed – When will you achieve it by? I will lose it by 10th July 2014

2. I want to get fit

  • Specific – What type of fitness or exercise? Running
  • Measurable – how far do you want to be able to run? 10K
  • Agreed – who are you accountable to? I am working with a personal trainer who will run with me once a week
  • Realistic – Do you have any injuries that might prevent you from being able to run? No, I’m ok to start
  • Timed – When will you achieve it by? I will take part in a 10K race on 1st September 2014

3. I want to tone up

  • Specific – What part of your body? Legs and bum
  • Measurable – How will you know when you are more toned? I will be able to fit in my size 12 jeans again
  • Agreed – who are you accountable to? My partner is going to make me try the jeans on every week
  • Realistic – Have you been able to fit in the size 12 jeans before? Yes, last year the jeans fit me
  • Timed – When will you achieve it by? I will be able to wear the jeans to a party on 1st August 2014

Can you see now how the SMART goals will help you get more focused and ultimately more successful in achieving your goals? Once you’ve set your goals you should feel excited and perhaps a little nervous. You’ll start to doubt yourself and make excuses but that’s completely normal and we’ll be working on that next week.

Your homework between now and next week is to set at least 1 SMART goal for you to focus on this summer. Any questions just ask – and feel free to share your goals at the end of this blog so you are accountable to me and the rest of the team!
