This week I started an experiment to test the theory that FRUIT can make you FAT! Now I know that might sound a little backward considering fruit is low calorie and seen as a great way to lose weight, however, there is also the scientific fact that fructose - the simple sugar found in fruit - is readily turned into fat when not used for energy. Having read up on the science behind the theory, I was almost disturbed by what I was reading and felt compelled to start the experiment straight away!

I know it's not going to be easy - un-doing several years of snacking on fruit and using it as a quick energy fix before exercise or during a mid-morning slump, but I've devised a plan that will hopefully see results.

At the start of the experiment I recorded my weight and most importantly my body fat%. This is what I'm aiming to see a difference in, and will not be reducing calorie intake only replacing usual fruit intake with other foods. I shall undertake the experiment for at least 3 weeks and if I see results (fingers crossed!) I shall tell you all and then keep up this new low-fruit way of life.

The plan looks like this:

Breakfast                   Oats with seeds/nuts
                                    Unsweetened cereal with natural yogurt
                                    Scrambled egg/beans on toast

Lunch                         Pasta/rice salad

Dinner                        Stir fry without sauce
                                    Meat/fish with vegetables
                                    Homemade soup

Drinks                        Tea/coffee (unsweetened)
                                    Water

Pre-exercise snack    1 portion of fruit
                                      Or small carbohydrate snack

Other snack options: Hummus
                                      Oat/rice cakes
                                      Natural yogurt

And the rules are simply:

  • Fruit should only be consumed as fuel for exercise
  • Do not drink fruit juice unless as fuel for exercise

If you would like to get involved with the experiment and you regularly eat more than 4 portions of fruit per day please feel free to contact me for more information. I have already recruited GB Age Group triathlete Melanie Ryding to help with the experiment. She has been following my 3-2-1 Diet plan for months and has seen great results with that, so it was time to step it up a notch with this experiment.

NB: This experiment is suitable for those who are already eating a healthy, balanced diet and is not intended to result in weight loss only body composition changes. I still believe that swapping chocolate bars for apples and cheesecakes for fruit salads is a great way to change habits and lose weight gradually. Please contact me for more information or to clarify any information.
